THE TRIM PEN
Frequently asked questions
1. What is the EZ Trim Trim Pen?
The EZ Trim Trim Pen is a handheld powered cannabis trimming and touch-up tool designed to provide the precision and operator control of scissors while reducing repetitive manual cutting.
A small spinning blade is located inside the Trim Pen's pick. The operator positions the pick around unwanted leaves or stems and activates the cutting blade with a push button, allowing individual pieces of plant material to be selectively removed.
2. Is the Trim Pen designed for complete trimming or touch-up?
It can be used for both, but the Trim Pen is particularly useful for quality control and touch-up after machine trimming.
In a commercial workflow, the objective isn't necessarily to hand-finish every flower. After machine trimming and sorting, operators can concentrate detailed finishing labor on higher-value flower that actually requires additional attention.
This allows the Trim Pen to complement a machine-trimming system rather than simply replacing scissors one-for-one.
For the complete workflow, see the EZ Trim Harvest Playbook.
3. How is the Trim Pen different from trimming with scissors?
Both methods give the operator direct control over which leaves and stems are removed. The difference is how the cut is made.
With scissors, the operator repeatedly opens and closes the blades manually. With the Trim Pen, the operator guides the pick to the material being removed and activates a powered spinning blade with a button.
The goal is to maintain the precision of manual trimming while reducing the repetitive cutting motion associated with traditional scissors.
4. Can the Trim Pen be used after a cannabis trimming machine?
Yes. Post-machine-trim touch-up is one of the Trim Pen's most useful commercial applications.
After flower has been machine trimmed and sorted, quality-control employees can inspect the appropriate flower grades and use the Trim Pen to selectively remove remaining leaves or stems.
This approach allows the primary trimming machine to perform the bulk of the work while detailed finishing labor is reserved for flower that actually needs it.
5. How much cannabis can one person trim with a Trim Pen?
EZ Trim lists production at approximately 1 pound every 3–4 hours per operator.
Actual production will vary depending on strain, flower structure, plant preparation, the amount of material that needs to be removed, operator experience, and whether the Trim Pen is being used for complete trimming or only final touch-up.
6. How long does the Trim Pen battery last?
The Trim Pen comes with two rechargeable batteries. EZ Trim's product documentation lists up to approximately four hours of continuous trimming before charging is required.
Having two batteries allows one battery to be available while the other is being charged, helping support longer trimming or quality-control sessions.
7. How do you clean the Trim Pen?
For routine cleaning, the Trim Pen's pick and blade can be dipped in isopropyl or denatured alcohol and briefly operated to help remove accumulated plant material.
Regular cleaning is especially important when processing sticky cannabis flower because resin buildup can affect cutting performance.
The Trim Pen is also designed with replaceable components, including the cone/pick, blade, motor, handle, batteries, and end cap.
8. Where does the Trim Pen fit into a commercial cannabis harvest workflow?
One effective dry-processing workflow is:
Bucking → Machine Trimming → Sorting → Quality Control/Touch-Up → Curing or Packaging
Within that process, the Trim Pen is primarily used during the quality-control and touch-up stage. Instead of applying detailed hand labor to every bud, flower can first be trimmed and separated by size, allowing employees to concentrate finishing work on the flower grades that require it.
This makes the Trim Pen part of a broader strategy to reduce unnecessary handling and labor throughout the harvest process.
For more information about sequencing these steps, see the EZ Trim Harvest Playbook.

This is Joe with easytrim and this is a quick video on operating the trim pen. The trim pen is meant to act as the tips of your scissors and just as your scissors when slightly open create a small V shape the pick on the trim pen has four V shapes that act as scissor tips. You want to start by holding the trim pen correctly and in the same manner you would hold scissors. Gripping it. This way allows you to train with the same style motion and precision you would have with scissors. The on-off button can then be pressed with either your thumb or finger? Additionally, you want to hold the pick at an angle parallel to the bud as opposed to perpendicular? This will deliver the most accuracy and align the scissor tips effectively. When you're ready to trim approach the buds with a v-shape opening on the pig as you would with the v-shaped opening on your scissors. This is the motion and angle of the trim pen. We have found works best for trimming. Again, when removing crow's feet trimming stems or bucking align the open V shape of the pick with what you want to trim. When you're finished trimming or as needed clean the Pick And Blade by dipping them into alcohol and running the blade for a few seconds. Wipe dry and you're back to trimming you can also use the cleaning brush supplied when doing a more thorough cleaning of the Pick And Blade. To replace or charge the battery unscrew the end cap unplug the battery wire harness and Slide the battery out of the tube connect the battery to the supplied charger and allow the battery to charge for just over an hour. Replace the battery by sliding it back into the tube reconnect the wire harness and screw the cap back on. To replace service or adjust the blade unscrew the cone and pick. Slide the blade off the motor shaft and using the supplied Allen key loosen the two set screws on the top of the motor coupling to reinstall Slide the blade and motor coupling onto the shaft then rotate it until it aligns properly allowing it to seat fully screw the cone and pick back on and ensure that the blade rests slightly below the pick. This ensures that the blade will not cut you or over cut the bud. Thanks for watching. And please don't hesitate to contact us with questions.
